Prevention of Biothreats: A Look Ahead

Overview

The conference Prevention of Biothreats: A Look Ahead was hosted by the Center for Biosecurity in collaboration with the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction, Proliferation, and Terrorism on October 6, 2009. The meeting convened more than 175 thought leaders from government, the technical and policy communities, academia, and the media to exchange views on preventing the development and use of biological weapons.

With the dual goals of presenting a coherent framework for existing, interlinked prevention efforts and sparking improvements in prevention policy and practice, the meeting focused on approaches to controlling materials and information; international treaties and agreements; surveillance, attribution, and deterrence; biodefense and resilience; and intelligence community efforts at detecting or interrupting development and use of bioweapons.

Featured speakers and panelists included representatives of major U.S. government programs (see agenda), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and private and non-profit initiatives working to prevent the development and use of biological weapons.
